If you’ve ever Googled “how to start solids” or “how to prevent stains from starting solids” you’re in the right place.
Like any milestone, starting solids can be both exciting and terrifying, and when it was our turn, I was no different. I was feeling a wide range of emotions and it quickly became overwhelming. This is the story of how I got mealtimes with my daughter under control and quit dealing with relentless stains - and I'm going to help you do it too.
It started with the globs of food I kept finding on the neckline of all her shirts. I knew this was going to be messy, but I thought she was covered. I tried all the ‘best bibs for starting solids’ that other moms recommended, but none of them ever protected the neckline, so what was I doing wrong?
Is she too small? Is the bib falling down? Should I try a different kind next time? Maybe double up?
After just a few weeks of this, it was really starting to drive me crazy and I had to figure something out. First I tried skipping clothes altogether, but my poor girl broke out in a rash immediately. Her sensitive skin was having a reaction from contact with dropped food and friction of the high chair straps.
Since I couldn’t avoid the stains, my next step was: if you can’t beat em, join em. If my daughter was wearing clothes I didn’t care about, then the stains wouldn’t matter, right? Well, even the shirts I designated to get ruined started to bother me too. But even worse, I was taking my cranky, hangry baby to the changing table before meals to switch her clothes which put both of us in a bad mood. By the time I got her to the high chair, she was more ready to throw down than eat a thing.
The last straw came in the form of one family lunch at a restaurant. When I tried to decide what my daughter would wear that day, my brain nearly short-circuited.
At this point, every time my daughter was eating, I was changing her into already stained clothes. I couldn't imagine doing this out in public, and I didn't want to dress her in a cute outfit that I loved, that I knew surely wouldn't survive. I was so exhausted by the mental toll of every meal, and the thought of experiencing all that frustration in a restaurant just made me want to cry.
I said to myself: Enough is enough. There has to be a way around this.
The day before our lunch outing, I sat and thought about what was happening and what had to change to avoid it. All I needed was a bib that specifically covered her neckline that would stay in place, even if her smock didn't. But after searching high and low, I found nothing available that came close.
The idea hit me out of nowhere, but once it was in my head, I couldn’t get it out. I didn’t want a bib that fastened around the neck. I needed a bib that fastened to her shirt!
I ran upstairs with a onesie in hand, pulled some old spare fabric out of the closet, dusted off my sewing machine and came back down thirty minutes later with the first (very rough) prototype. I told my husband, "we're trying this at dinner tonight, and if it works, it's coming with us to lunch tomorrow." And it worked.
I can’t even describe the relief I felt when we peeled off my creation. Despite the bib being covered in food, the shirt underneath was as clean as the day we bought it. Finally, a stain free meal! And our lunch the next day was saved.
We affectionately began calling it "that thing I made" and it became a staple at every single meal. I was always pleasantly surprised each time I took it off, finding that it did, once again, protect my daughter's neckline as intended. Eventually I landed on the name "Bibbler" and suddenly, it was real.
One day my husband said to me, I think you should file a patent. My first thought was, patents are for inventions, I just made a bib for my baby. But then I realized, this bib is an invention, and other parents should be able to benefit from it the way I did.
It was that moment where I realized, this is something that needs to be produced and available to everyone. Fast forward to today, September 2025, the Bibbler is Patent Pending and finally in bulk production.
